2014 Acura ILX AC Condenser Repair in Tualatin, Oregon

This can’t be too hard. Is it possible that I can replace this thing by myself?

We would not recommend it. If you release refrigerant into the air then you could obtain chemical burns. You should avoid trying to fix this problem by yourself unless you are a professional.

If I brought this somewhere and wanted to look at the OBD codes then which ones would I be seeing?

There is only one OBD code and that code is P0534: A/C Refrigerant Charge Loss.

If it is refrigerant then that means that it could damage the ozone?

Yes. The refrigerant is a chemical that will injure you if you do not handle it correctly. Directly unleashing it into the air will cause damage to the ozone. You should avoid working with this chemical if possible. Leave it to the professionals if you can.

If the chemical is so dangerous then how do you deal with this problem?

The truth is that replacing air conditioning components means that you have to do a complete evacuation of the air conditioning system with a special refrigerant recovery machine. Your engine cooling system will have to be drained of all its liquid as well. After all that is done then you can start removing things like refrigerant lines, hoses, fans, and electrical connectors. There are times when the front bumper must be removed as well. Hardware and things like mounting bolts must also be taken out so that the radiator and the vehicle are not still attached when the condenser is being removed. They will need to reinstall all those pieces and then make sure all the air is gone so that they can recharge the system with refrigerant.

How will my Acura ILX respond if it has a bad condenser?

If your condenser goes bad then your AC system is bad. Your vehicle’s temperature will likely be warmer than the temperature outside and your idle speed will not be normal at all.

Where is the condenser located in the system?

You will usually find this piece next to the radiator. In fact, it is not a stretch to say that the radiator and the condenser are similar.

What does the condenser do?

The condenser takes the high temperature/pressure gas and cools it down into a liquid that is still high pressure but lower temperature. The liquid is required for your AC system to function properly.

How does it do what it is supposed to do in my 2014 Acura ILX?

Air pushes across the condenser. The air cools the refrigerant, in a gas state at the time, in the condenser. It returns to a liquid state and then it is moved to the accumulator.

If I actually do have a condenser problem then will I be able to drive my vehicle?

It depends on whether or not if your condenser is leaking. If it is not leaking then you can drive the vehicle but warm to hot temperatures will not be comfortable at all. If you do have a leak then you have a different problem altogether. The leak can let things like dirt build up in the system and clog it. The more you drive with your vehicle in this state the more likely it is to develop this problem.

Well, when do I have to start worrying about this thing being a problem for my 2014 Acura ILX?

A faulty air conditioning system is usually due to a physical problem such as damage or clogs. The fact that this is the case makes it very difficult to judge if and when a vehicle will have a problem with the system. There is no time frame or mileage count a person can point to as a time where you should start looking at your condenser as something that needs to be serviced.

I know condensers have these small metal fin things. Do they get clogged?

Yes. They can get clogged and that means that you will have to use a special comb to fix the problem.

Why is it that physical damage is the way that this problem usually happens?

The location of the AC Condensor is the reason. It is in a spot where collisions to the front of your vehicle would affect it greatly. If you have a front end collision then you should have the part inspected to see if it is working correctly.

What about people who don’t have a lot of money? Is there an option for us if we need this repair and don’t have it hanging around our pockets?

Yes. We work with a company that approves around 95% of the people who walk into our shop through the front door. It does that regardless of the financial situation of the person. All you need is 25 dollars and a bank account. If you have those two things then the program is highly likely to approve you as well.
