Automatic transmissions generate heat and are dependent on the transmission fluid for cooling. Much of the time your transmission operating temperatures are higher than your engine operating temperature! Even the synthetic transmission fluid used in your Sprinter will experience diminished capacities when the fluid temperature exceeds 200°F.
Our tests show that when your Sprinter is carrying a heavy load (1000 pounds or more) and towing 5000 pounds under extreme conditions the transmission temperatures will exceed 200º F even on a mild 65 degree day. Under light load conditions, transmission temperatures will still approach 200º F on a very hot summer day. The key to extending automatic transmission life is keeping the fluid fresh, clean, and cool. Our transmission cooler kits will, depending on your driving conditions, lower the operating temperature of your transmission by 20º F or more and help keep it in the optimum operating range of 160°F to 200°F. Our factory quality kits are placed in series after the factory cooler to dissipate additional heat before transmission fluid enters the transmission.
Depending on skill level, installation is very simple and takes 30-60 minutes for the 02-06 model and 1-2 hours for the 07 and newer model . Installation does not involve any special tools or drilling any holes and fluid loss is minimal. On the 07 and newer model, you will need to cut and splice into the factory transmission line hose. The quality of our kit far exceeds the generic kits that are available from local parts suppliers. In fact, a vast majority of the transmission coolers and kits available will not fit or function properly when used with the Sprinter transmission. We use existing factory fittings and race quality components and hardware.

We also offer a transmission temperature gauge and sender kit for the 02-06 model. The kit is specifically designed for use on the Sprinter transmission. It will safely help you monitor the transmission operating temperature and give you accurate temperatures for correct fluid level checks. The temperature sender unit installation is easy, takes about 10-20 minutes and requires no special tools. There is no fluid loss so you do not have to worry about the transmission fluid level. We have probed for temperature accuracy and found it accurate within 3-5 degrees of the transmission's internal temperature. The kit includes the Trans Temp gauge, temperature sender assembly and 12’ of sender wire loom. The gauge is a 12V, 2 1/16th unit with black bezel, black face with white numbers, red needle and has back lighting for night viewing. The initial degree sweep is 140º to 200º which is perfect for the Sprinter transmission.
